Durham, NC City Council Opposes Arizona's SB1070 - Chris Liu-Beers
This week the City Council of Durham, NC voted to suspend city-funded travel to Arizona in response to the passage of SB 1070. According to one local organizer, Durham is the first city in the southeast to make such a statement.
In addition, the city’s resolution urges President Obama, Congress and the NC congressional delegation to work toward comprehensive immigration reform.

Ordinance prevents undocumented workers from settling in Fremont, Nebraska.
On Monday, voters in Fremont passed an ordinance requiring employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check the status of all job applicants. The ordinance also mandates that landlords obtain a license from the city which will check the immigration status of applicants during the approval process. These measures effectively ban undocumented immigrants from residing in Fremont.

Last month, the mayor of Costa Mesa — where I live — proposed and passed a proclamation declaring our city a “Rule of Law” city. It is not that we were in total anarchy before May. It was a statement essentially saying that we are intolerant of illegal immigrants. Since there is no policy to accompany this proclamation at this point, it is just a name. However, the proclamation alone has created a lot of fear and confusion in my neighborhood.
